Seu Jorge! Manguiera!

23 07 2008

from his 2001 album, here is a fun modern brazilian track replete with vocodered portuguese. best known for his roles in City of God, and the Life Aquatic ( beautiful, acoustic Bowie covers ), he lets loose here with a party jam previous to either of those movies. check him in the hendrix cover rip off above.

this is most likely a shoutout to a samba school that inspired him, Estação Primeira de Mangueira. Brazil’s most famous.

COZY POWELL – DANCE WITH THE DEVIL

17 07 2008

Cozy Powell, one of rock’s mightiest drummers. He was in more giant rock bands than anyone, and sessioned on some great stuff with Mickie Most.

That list includes the Jeff Beck Group, Rainbow, Michael Schenker Group, Whitesnake, Emerson Lake and Powell, Gary Moore, and Black Sabbath, to name a few. He also did session work for Hot Chocolate, Donovan, Suzi Quatro, Roger Daltrey, Cinderella, Yngwie Malmsteen, and Tipton Entwistle Powell among many others.

Cozy Powell died on April 5, 1998 following a car crash, driving his Saab 9000 at 104 mph in bad weather on the M4 motorway near Bristol, while talking to his girlfriend on his mobile phone. He was not wearing a seatbelt and was over the drink-drive limit.

‘Dance With the Devil’ reached number 3 in the UK singles chart during January 1974. The track inspired teens all over the world to pick up some sticks and bang on that drum all day. 7″ Single version below the live video version from the mid to late 80’s.

DUB IT UP!

14 07 2008

This Japanese dub outfit recorded this number in 1999 on the album One Punch, and King Jammy did a dub version in 2000 from the album King Jammy meets Dry and Heavy in the Jaws of the Tiger. This is a massive track with bitchen echo chamber horns, and filtered vocals that make nice-nice with some sweet acoustic guitar licks.

great for summer sippin’ at a bbq of your choosing.

Fehlfarben, of course!

7 07 2008

Fehlfarben, out of the musically productive Dusseldorf, formed in ’79 out the ashes of Mittagspause. Named after a term describing erroneous color showing up in printing, they released a debut album only to have the lead singer, who worked at Xerox, leave the band.

This is the flip-side to their “hit”, Ein Jahr, which is also quite good, and groovier, although they only got their disco on in jest.

They sound like Gang of Four mixed with well, Dusseldorf, or some other Rother-type guitar workout group of that era. Has become a very important German-language rock record.

catch what they have been up to here, Fehlfarben.com

Killing Joke – Eighties

6 07 2008

Started in 1979, this group started by Jaz Coleman, Geordie Walker, who soon added Youth on bass, they had a sound that sometimes defied categorization. creeping out of the post-punk apocalypse, the sound has an aggressive, industrial, punky vibration, with reggae and funk and metal weaving into the tapestry of the Joke.

Released in 1984, the track has the later distinction of having been the inspiration for Come as You Are by Nirvana. They sued Nirvana, but later dropped it after Kurt died.

Here is the Serious Dance Mix of this track from the original 12″, clocking in at over 6 minutes! Eighties! I’m Livin in the Eighties! I push and I struggle!
